Course Overview

Science is the study of our natural world. Science not only investigates our world, but develops critical thinking, which helps foster valuable life skills, problem solving, and communication aptitude. Science is broken down into many fields and disciplines that elementary students soon learn to differentiate. At each grade level, science becomes increasingly complex with the expectation of increased science vocabulary and understanding.

Kindergarten Science

The process of science involves a systematic approach to discovering and revealing reality. Understanding what science is and how to use it allows students to be prepared for a constantly evolving world.

Our tutoring equips kindergarten students with:

  • The ability to think critically, with an understanding of problem solving.
  • An understanding and appreciation of science processes and discoveries.
  • An understanding of the tools and methods of science.
  • An understanding of systems of measurement and their use.
  • An understanding of the basic processes of push and pull forces.
  • An understanding of weather and climate.
  • An understanding of the processes of life and life’s requirements.
  • An understanding of solar energy and its uses for all life, plants and animals focus.
First Grade Science

In first grade science, students are expected to build upon what they have learned previously in kindergarten. The students’ comprehension of science broadens in first grade, while students continue to develop critical and scientific inquiry skills. Observation, data collection, data organization, data analysis, and drawing reasonable conclusions based on the evidence are expected. General topics will include basic earth and space science, animal environments, and energy systems.

  • An understanding and appreciation of science processes and discoveries.
  • An understanding of the tools and methods of science.
  • An understanding of systems of measurement and their use.
  • An understanding of the effects of gravity on bodies in space.
  • An understanding of how objects near Earth affect Earth’s chemical and biological systems.
  • An understanding of the processes of genetics through familial traits and disease.
  • An understanding of adaptations in plants and animals that aid in their survival.
  • An understanding of solar energy and its uses for all life, focusing on plants and animals.
Second Grade Science

In second grade science, students are expected to build upon what they have learned previously in first grade and are introduced to new topics that deepen their scientific understanding. The students’ comprehension of science broadens in second grade, while students continue to develop critical and scientific inquiry skills. Observation, data collection, data organization, data analysis, and drawing reasonable conclusions based on the evidence are expected. The ability to recognize patterns in the visible universe is a common theme for this grade level, along with an introduction to matter. The general topics will include land features, natural phenomena, plant and animal habitats, and properties of matter.

Our tutoring equips 2nd grade students with:

  • An understanding and appreciation of science processes and discoveries.
  • An understanding of the tools and methods of science.
  • An understanding of systems of measurement and their use.
  • An understanding of natural aquatic features, such as rivers, lakes, streams, and oceans.
  • An understanding of general land features, such as hills and mountains.
  • The recognition of volcanic action, precipitation, rain, and wind.
  • An introduction to biogeography and fit life forms.
  • An understanding of materials used in constructing natural and human-made objects and the various states of matter they possess.
Third Grade Science

In third grade science, students are expected to build upon what they have learned previously in second grade and are introduced to new topics that deepen their scientific understanding. The students’ comprehension of science broadens in third grade, while students continue to develop critical and scientific inquiry skills. Observation, data collection, data organization, data analysis, and drawing reasonable conclusions based on the evidence are expected. The ability to recognize factors that contribute to life and how life adapts to changes in their environment is a central theme this grade level. In addition, physical science principles are discussed more in depth.

  • An understanding of how inherited traits help an organism survive in varied environments.
  • The ability to make predictions based on physical characteristics of biological organisms.
  • An understanding of humans’ physical attributes that allow them to survive in different places on the planet.
  • An understanding of what causes weather and how to recognize weather patterns.
  • An understanding of how weather phenomenon can be predicted.
  • An understanding of the negative consequences of certain weather phenomena.
  • An understanding of magnetism and the forces of attraction and repulsion.
  • Knowledge of friction and force and an introduction to energy.
Fourth Grade Science

In fourth grade science, students are expected to build upon what they have learned previously in third grade and are introduced to new topics that deepen their scientific understanding. The students’ comprehension of science broadens in fourth grade, while students continue to develop critical and scientific inquiry skills. Observation, data collection, data organization, data analysis, and drawing reasonable conclusions based on the evidence are expected. Critical thinking skills are developed further via Socratic methodology to encourage use in science and beyond. This grade level is expected to generally cover energy, energy production, and organismal development.

Our tutoring equips 4th grade students with:

  • The ability to think critically, with an understanding of problem solving.
  • The ability to understand and appreciate science processes and discoveries.
  • An understanding of the tools and methods of science.
  • An understanding of systems of measurement and their use.
  • An understanding of energy transferred between objects.
  • An understanding of how energy is used and its importance in everyday life.
  • An understanding of fossil fuels and alternative energy sources.
  • An understanding of how weather and other natural phenomena can be used to harness energy.
  • An understanding of human impact on organisms due to energy consumption.
  • An understanding of methods to reduce human impact on the environment.
  • An understanding of weathering processes, such as erosion, surf, tides, wind, rain, and freezing
Fifth Grade Science

In fifth grade science, students are expected to build upon what they have learned previously in fourth grade with regard to matter, environments, the solar system, and Earth systems. Students continue to enhance and develop critical thinking skills and increase scientific literacy. Observation, data collection, data organization, data analysis, and drawing reasonable conclusions based on the evidence are expected. Critical thinking skills are developed further via Socratic methodology to encourage use in science and beyond. This grade level is expected to cover research skills, energy and mass conservation, matter and density, volume, ecosystems, Earth systems, and the solar system.

Our tutoring equips 5th grade students with:

  • The ability to think critically, with an understanding of problem solving.
  • An understanding and appreciation of science processes and discoveries.
  • An understanding of the tools and methods of science.
  • An understanding of systems of measurement (time, mass, temperature, weight, and volume) and their use.
  • An initial understanding of the laws of conservation of mass.
  • An understanding that substances are made up of smaller particles.
  • An understanding of volume using examples of air and air pressure.
  • An understanding of our solar system, its scale, and its place in the Universe.
  • The ability to describe energy flow in an ecosystem.
  • An understanding of the reason for the seasons.
  • An understanding of how the stars provided seasonal cues for early humans and for us today.
  • An understanding of water resources on the Earth.
  • An understanding of the various major systems: geosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere, and atmosphere.
